Grounding tools

Come back to your body

Simple tools for when things feel like too much.

A slow, steady breath tells your nervous system it's safe to settle. Follow the circle: expand as you breathe in, contract as you breathe out.

Ready

Notice your surroundings, one sense at a time. This gently pulls attention out of a spiraling thought and into the present room.

Read slowly. Move your attention through each part of your body without judgment — just noticing.

Start by settling into a comfortable position. Let your eyes close if that feels okay, or soften your gaze. Notice your feet — the weight of them, any warmth or pressure. Just notice, nothing to change. Move up to your legs. Are they tense or relaxed? Let them soften a little with your next breath. Notice your stomach and chest rising and falling. There's no need to control the breath, just watch it happen. Bring attention to your shoulders. Many of us carry tension here. See if you can let them drop, even slightly. Notice your hands, your arms, resting. Finally, notice your jaw, your forehead, the muscles around your eyes. Let them be soft. Take one more breath, and when you're ready, gently open your eyes and return to the room.

Sensory grounding

Hold something cool or textured. Press your feet firmly into the floor. Notice the sensation without needing it to mean anything.

Self‑talk scripts

"This feeling is temporary." "I have gotten through hard moments before." "I don't have to fix this right now."

Breathing exercises

Try box breathing: in for 4, hold for 4, out for 4, hold for 4. Repeat until your shoulders drop.

Safe place visualization

Picture somewhere you feel calm — real or imagined. Notice the light, the sounds, the temperature. Stay there for a few breaths.

Calming music

Five ambient tracks that play back to back, blending gently from one into the next — it won't cut off abruptly, and loops for as long as you'd like.

If you're feeling overwhelmed right now

You don't have to figure everything out this second. Let's slow down together.

Try a few slow breaths — in for four counts, out for six. You can use the breathing tool to help pace it.

Look around and name three things you can see. Feel your feet on the ground. You are here, in this moment, and this moment will pass.

If you can, reach out to someone you trust — a friend, family member, or a professional who knows your history. You don't have to carry this alone.
